(ABC 6 News) - The Goodhue County Sheriff's Office said no threat was found after they investigated a vague social media post that sparked concern in Pine Island Wednesday.
In a press release, the sheriff's office said around 1 p.m. they became aware of a post that stated, "I'm sick of this it is going to end."
Deputies identified the 14-year-old former Pine Island student that made the post and conducted a welfare check.
After interviewing the juvenile law enforcement determined there was no threat to the public and the individual was not going to harm themselves.
The press release notes that throughout the day the post continued to circulate through social media and that, "rumors began to circulate in the Pine Island area. At one point the rumors were indicating students were afraid for their safety and became afraid that an act of school violence might occur. The sheriff's office then began to investigate these allegations and discovered that the individuals had been misinformed by numerous social media posts that were either forwarded or generated by others."
The sheriff's office said at no time was there a direct threat to the school and that the school was never put into lockdown.
The sheriff's office also said they will continue to investigate the allegations but, "would like to remind the public regarding how quickly false or inaccurate information can generate on social media."
