(ABC 6 News) - Residents across southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa need to consider conserving energy Thursday evening.

Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services (Albert Lea), MiEnergy Cooperative (Rushford), People’s Energy Cooperative (Oronoco), and Heartland Power Cooperative (St. Ansgar) have issued a peak energy alert from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

Members enrolled in the Dual Fuel or Water Heater Energy Management Programs will be affected until 11:00 p.m. this evening.

Tips for keeping energy use low in this cold weather include:

  • Set heat to 68 degrees or lower if no one is home
  • Wear layers of clothing
  • Wait to run the dishwasher or to do laundry
  • Don't turn on the oven
