Pay it Forward: Kathi Finley

(ABC 6 News) -- Most people who know Kathi Finley probably associate her with Austin's "Paint the Town Pink" program.

But it's her other ways of helping the community that caused Debbie Retterath to nominate Finley for the ABC 6 News/Home Federal Bank Pay it Forward Award.

"She's an incredible baker, so she bakes and sells cupcakes and gives the proceeds to everybody else but herself," Retterath said. "She also is an extreme couponer so she finds incredible values and she makes personal care gift baskets for some of the patients at some treatment facilities and she visits them and she takes these wonderful gift baskets to these patients often, and so she uses her incredible skills to give to others."

Retterath said she knew Finley would be able to stretch the $600 award to help as many people as possible using her couponing skills.

When ABC 6 and Retterath surprised Finley, there were tears.

"You know how many people I can help?" Finley said.

And for her, being able to give back shows signs of the blessings in her own life.

"My favorite saying has been, 'When you have more than you need, build a longer table, not a higher fence,'" Finley said.

Finley expects to be able to use the $600 award to purchase thousands of dollars worth of baking supplies and items for the gift baskets.
