Pay It Forward: Tanya Oberg

(ABC 6 News)--There are many stories out there of people who volunteer—the ones who really give their time to those in need.

Our more recent ABC 6 News Home Federal Savings Bank Pay it Forward winner has been volunteering for many years all over the world.

“I just live for the moment, you know where I’m at, at that time is where I like being,” said Pay it Forward winner, Tanya Oberg as she points out all the volunteering photos at her work desk.

Volunteering in different countries and caring for her patients at Mayo Clinic Saint Marys in Rochester is where Tanya wants to be.

“I just love helping people, “said Tanya.

Tanya has a list of adventures she’s been on all to give back to others.

“She volunteers with the American Red Cross. Whenever there’s a fire in town she’s usually the one that’s answering the pager in the middle of the night to find them a place to stay,” said Mary Pyfferoen who nominated Tanya for the award.

Most recently Tanya was in Haiti along with a surgical team of doctors and nurses, but it was far from her first trip to Haiti.

“I’ve been down there 21 times since the earthquake,” said Tanya.

The earthquake that rocked Haiti in 2010 killing over 200,000 people. Tanya has also been to Texas after hurricane Harvey hit, helping remove tiling and clearing homes to the studs.

“Some of the days are extremely long, but I do get energized by the people we’re helping,” Tanya said.

Tanya also volunteers with her church in other countries three to four times a year, for several years.

“She really likes to give back. That’s just the type of person she is,” said Mary.

Which is why Mary and Maureen Musselman nominated Tanya for the Pay it Forward Award. Tanya was very surprised when the women surprised her with $600, but giving back will never end for her.

Next up she’s heading back to Haiti for another three weeks in January.

“The stories aren’t always positive, but to know that you’ve given some quality time with family and help ease their pain and anxiety is always rewarding,” said Tanya.

Tanya said the $600 will go towards paying for her next trip.
