Pay It Forward - Larry Weigel

December 01, 2017 01:39 PM

(ABC 6 News) - This week, we are giving back to a Vietnam veteran through our ABC 6 News Home Federal Savings Bank Pay It Forward award. ABC 6 News reporter Roxanne Elias tells us what motivates him to continue serving others.

"I've been doing this now for the last two years," says Larry Weigel.

That's how long, Vietnam veteran Larry Weigel has been opening doors for his community.

"We were trying to get a hold of someone who would help us with a lift chair for my father and my wife made a few calls here and there and got his name and we contacted him and it was history from there," says Jeff Vanbeek.

Larry, a member of the Disabled American Veterans Association is well known for providing for those in need of, sometimes, very expensive medical equipment.

"We have regular wheelchairs," adds Larry. "I have electric wheelchairs, wheel carts, I have shower chairs. I have portable commodes. I have canes, I have crutches."

His call to help came when he was diagnosed with diabetes.

"I'm a disabled vet," he admits.

Exposed to Agent Orange in Vietnam.

"Have been for 46 years," he says. "That's what forced me out of the military."

"Very caring. Any questions we had, helped us set the chair up. Told us a little bit about all the service he did," remembers Jeff. "And it's just a great thing that someone like that can do that for especially veterans."

And that's why Jeff and his wife nominated Larry for this week's ABC 6 News Home Federal Savings Bank Pay It Forward award.

So thanks to Home Federal Savings Bank we're gonna give Jeff here $600 so that he can give to Larry.

So we walked across the street to the Legion in downtown Alden to give Larry the big news.

"On behalf of Home Federal and ABC 6 News you're this week's Pay It Forward award winner," explained Jeff. "For what?" asked Larry. "For all the service you do. Giving my dad his chair. $600 bucks," explained Jeff. "Well thank you very much," responded Larry.

A well-deserved prize Larry plans to give right back.

"It was donated to me, I'm gonna donated it to the D.A.V.," vows Larry.

That way, no one else in Larry's community will have to see another door close.

"If I've got it, you get it," promises Larry.
