(ABC 6 News) -- Authorities say tens of thousands of dollars in damage was done at multiple new homes being built in Oronoco. This is just the latest in a string of construction thefts in Olmsted County.
Around 7 a.m. Tuesday, September 11, the Olmsted County Sheriff's Office got a call from Fraser Construction company about a theft at their sand pit on the 9300 block of 50 Ave NW in Oronoco Township.
A several-hundred-pound job site box had been stolen that had multiple tools and equipment inside. The theft happened sometime between Monday night and Tuesday morning.
Then, just before noon on Tuesday, a deputy was at a new home that is still under construction on the 1400 block of Riverwood Ct. SW in Oronoco taking a report of stolen construction equipment outside the home.
While taking the complaint in that case, the deputy decided to check some of the other homes in that area as there are several new homes being built.
At one house, the deputy saw there had been forced entry into the home and someone had thrown white paint all over the interior including on cabinets, counters, floors and walls.
In the next house, the deputy opened the door and saw water running everywhere in the house. The water was coming from light fixtures and through the ceiling from the top floor to the bottom floor. The deputy went upstairs and found two faucets running with the drains plugged. Olmsted County Sheriff's Captain Scott Behrns said damage in that home is estimated around $50,000.
In another house, the deputy said a faucet in the garage had been on, and there was about 1"-2" of water on the garage floor.
Capt. Behrns said not only do they believe the Oronoco theft/vandalism cases are related; authorities also believe these are connected to several other construction thefts in the area.
"Somebody knows something," said Capt. Behrns. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-tips.
