A rural Austin man has been charged in connection with a fatal crash south of the city Thursday evening.

Christopher Stewart, 31, is charged with felony criminal vehicular homicide-operating a vehicle in a negligent manner while under the influence as well as misdemeanor counts of driving after revocation and driving while impaired.

According to a criminal complaint, deputies from the Mower County Sheriff's Office were called to the intersection of County Highways 28 and 29 at 5:17 p.m. Thursday on a report of a two-vehicle crash.

Deputies found an elderly man, who had been driving a 1998 Dodge Caravan, dead, and Stewart, who had been driving a 2001 Ford F-350, standing nearby with the truck's owner.

A deputy asked Stewart for his driver's license and the truck's owner told the deputy Stewart's license was revoked. Stewart and the truck's owner reportedly told the deputy the Caravan had failed to stop at a stop sign.

While the deputy was interviewing Stewart, he noticed Stewart's pupils were dilated and slow to react to light, according to the complaint.

Stewart failed a number of field sobriety tests and later told the deputy he had taken an Adderall. The deputy reportedly told Stewart he believed he had used drugs in the previous two days and Stewart nodded in agreement.

Stewart was arrested and taken to the Mower County Jail, where he took a blood test. The results have not been released.

A witness told another officer Stewart had passed him at a high rate of speed shortly before the crash, the complaint said.

The name of the victim has also not been released pending family notification.
