One person is injured after a vehicle crashed into a building in Rochester early Saturday morning.
The Rochester Fire Department sent out information on Saturday stating that they responded to a building on fire caused by the structure's gas supply. Firefighters said the fire started after a vehicle crashed into the building. The incident happened on Saturday, around 1:14 a.m. at 3918 18th Avenue Northwest.
Firefighters report that the Rochester Police Department pulled out the occupant of the vehicle before they arrived.
At the scene of the fire, crews say that electrical lines were compromised and were still energized while firefighters tried to extinguish flames.
The Rochester Fire Department was able to control the fire with hose lines and extinguish the fire by shutting off the gas at the gas meter. Firefighters searched the structure for extension and ventilated the structure. No fire personnel was injured during the incident.
The quick action of the firefighters kept the fire from spreading beyond the rear entrance. Firefighters say they worked to clear heavy smoke from the building, performed air monitoring, and began the fire investigation.
Several other agencies assisted in this incident: Gold Cross Ambulance Service, Rochester Police Department, Rochester Public Utilities, and Minnesota Energy Resources.
The east side of the business sustained heavy fire damage and had smoke and water damage throughout. The vehicle that struck the building was a total loss.
Initial damage estimate is in excess of $200,000.00.
