(KSTP) -- Officials have identified the man shot and killed by police in Shakopee Friday night, as well as the officer who shot him.
Sunday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner said 61-year-old James Paul Hanchett died of multiple gunshot wounds.
Shakopee police responded to the 800 block of Apgar Street just after 11 p.m. Friday on a fire alarm call. At the residence, police say they were met by a man with a handgun.
The police department tweeted the man "raised the handgun and pointed at the primary office. Fearing for his life, the officer fired his weapon hitting the male."
Officers attempted lifesaving measures. The man was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The officers involved were wearing body cameras, police said, and a handgun was recovered from the scene.
Sunday night, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension identified the officer who shot Hanchett as Officer Thor Carlson.
Carlson has been with the department for 12 years and is on administrative leave, the BCA said. The agency continues to investigate the shooting.
