(ABC 6 News) - Police said a pit bull was shot and killed Monday afternoon after it became aggressive towards an officer.
According to the Austin Police Department, officers were called to the 2100 block of 2nd Ave SE around 1 p.m. Monday for a report of an aggressive dog.
A resident reported that the dog was running loose and had tried to jump a fence into a backyard where two small dogs were.
Police said when the officer arrived the resident gave the officer a treat hoping it could be used to calm the dog.
Instead, Police Chief Brian Krueger said, the dog began growling and lunging at the officer in an aggressive manner.
Krueger said the officer shot and killed the dog to protect his safety.
A witness told the officer's supervisor that the officer acted appropriately given the threatening nature of the dog.
The dog was described as a large pit bull with a white head and black body, it was not wearing a collar and police have not been able to identify its owner.
