(ABC 6 News) - It was a chaotic scene in Northeast Rochester Sunday night as a plume of black smoke came out from under a bridge on 11th Avenue and 7th Street Northeast.
"At times it has been an encampment for homeless people under there. There'd be tents under there or boxes,” said Rochester Resident and Board Member of the Eastside Neighborhood Association Michael LaPlante.
Over the years, he has stopped by the location multiple times, noticing up to three shelters under the bridge.
"They had grocery carts full of all kinds of stuff, grills and lighter fluids,” he said.
So when he heard that a fire broke out there Sunday night, he wasn’t surprised.
"Lots of stuff around, jugs, paper, plastic," he said.
Not to mention—"I have seen smoke coming out from under the bridge before," he said.
According to the Rochester Fire Department, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. The smoke and fire damage resulted in a complete loss of home goods that were underneath the bridge and superficial smoke staining the bridge itself.
"I wanted to see if it was as bad as it looked and see if anybody had been hurt," said LaPlante.
There were no injuries according to the fire department.
LaPlante hopes someone takes action to address homelessness in Rochester soon, so this doesn’t happen again.
"We should tackle this problem so there aren't homeless people living under bridges like that and in very unsafe conditions,” he said.
