(ABC 6 News) - The Rochester Police Department said an 18-year-old victim's personal information was compromised after a recent phone scam.

According to Rochester Police Captain Casey Moilanen, the 18-year-old female received an automated voice call claiming the victim was receiving a call from the social security office on her cell phone and was connected to an unknown man, claiming to be a social security official.

According to a police report, the suspect informed the victim that someone had rented a car in her name, in a different state, and was using her social security number. The suspect allegedly added that the rented vehicle was recovered and had traces of cocaine and blood inside.

Captain Moilanen said the suspect asked the victim to confirm her social security number and asked her for the local, non-emergency phone number for local law enforcement, and that she'd receive a call shortly from local agencies.

Captain Moilanen said the victim gave the suspect her social security information and the law enforcement number. He also allegedly told the victim she'd receive a call from her local law enforcement.

According to Captain Moilanen, the suspect "spoofed" the local law enforcement number and an unknown female suspect called the victim, pretending to be local authorities.

According to a police report, the female suspect instructed the victim to go to Walmart, Target or CVS and buy a pre-paid gift card. The female suspect also asked the victim where she banked and how much money was in her account.

Captain Moilanen said the victim realized the whole situation was a scam when she arrived at Walmart and contacted authorities.

According to Captain Moilanen, the victim did not lose any money, but the suspects now know the victim's social security number and where she banks.
