(ABC 6 News) - The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has denied a permit for a proposed hog feedlot in Fillmore County near Mabel.

According to a press release, the MPCA is recommending a study of nitrate-contaminated waters in southeast Minnesota, where the feedlot was proposed.

"The Catalpa project is the first big new feedlot application we've had in Fillmore County since extensive data on nitrate contamination of drinking water wells has come out," wrote MPCA Commissioner John Linc Stine in the release.

The release goes on to state that Stine says, "the issue is bigger than any one feedlot or farm, saying it would be unfair to put the responsibility for the broad issue of existing nitrate contamination of groundwater onto one farmer."

Catalpa Ag had proposed to build a nearly 5,000 head swine farrowing facility in Fillmore County that would have generated an estimated 7.3 million gallons of liquid manure every year.
