Campers Head Outdoors for Memorial Day Weekend

May 24, 2019 07:25 AM

(ABC 6 News) -- It's a busy weekend for campgrounds across the region as folks from near and far flock to the great outdoors for what many consider to be the unofficial start to the summer season.

At Oakwoods Trails Campground in rural Freeborn County, just about all of the 21 campsites are booked up for Memorial Day weekend.

That means big bucks for owner Brian Sorenson. He estimates this one weekend alone accounts for around ten percent of his seasonal business, and whether it's catering to locals or travelers he says there's something about the quiet and connecting with nature that has a near-universal appeal.

"We meet people from all over the world, all over the United States," Sorenson said. "We've had people from seven different countries and every province in Canada. You just never know who's going to pull in."

While overall this weekend's weather looks to be fairly nice, Sorenson says even in years past when that hasn't been the case, that hasn't stopped people from coming out to go camping.
