Med City Marathon Announces Change of Plans for Tomorrow's Main Event

May 26, 2018 10:49 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- Sunday's weather is causing some significant changes in one of the major sports events in Rochester.  According to a Scheels Med City Marathon Facebook post on Saturday, officials have decided that Sunday's marathon will not take place because of the heat.  Officials mentioned in the post that "The health and safety of our runners is our highest priority."  They also said that they made this decision in conjunction with the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine team. In a statement, they wrote, "The decision was made in the best interest of the runners, as the high temperatures create significant risk for serious, and sometimes fatal, heat-related conditions, especially in runners who are not acclimatized to the heat."

The statement also mentioned that half-marathon runners will still be at risk for heat illness and should take the following precautions:

  • Consider withdrawing if you are not well conditioned for the race.
  • Slow your pace.
  • Use thirst as your guide to stay adequately hydrated during the race.
  • There will be a hard cut off time of 11:00 am, as the temperatures will reach black flag levels at that time.

They said all runners in the full marathon and 20-mile event will be moved into the half marathon event.  The half-marathon will run as planned.

“I think just for the health and safety of the runners,” said Race Director, Mark Bongers. “With a lot of the different things that are going on, we have a lot better data than we did 20 years ago or even 10 years ago as far as what's right or what's wrong. Tomorrow is not a day to be putting people on running 26.2 miles."

The half marathon will begin a 7 a.m. at Byron Elementary School.

A special announcement for relay teams was also made. Organizers said that with the adjustment made to the full marathon, relay teams will now pair up and run with each other for the first and second legs. They are telling relay teams to send two runners to the start line, and two runners to exchange zone 1.
