(ABC 6 News) The Mayo Clinic will match nearly $171,000 in donations to the Salvation Army's Red Kettles during the two day match event. The Mayo Clinic pledged to match the donations dollar for dollar with no limit.
With the match, the total raised during the event is more than $341,000.
"The generosity of the Rochester community during this campaign was truly inspiring," says Gianrico Farrugia, M.D., president and CEO, Mayo Clinic. "We want to thank each person who donated to The Salvation Army's red kettles during the two-day match period and the many volunteers who rang the bells this season. This was the first year that Mayo Clinic challenged our community with an unlimited match, and it is clear you heard the call to assist Rochester's most vulnerable residents."
The Salvation Army will use the money throughout the year to help those in need.
"The Salvation Army is beyond grateful to Mayo Clinic for matching our community's unbelievable generosity during the Red Kettle Christmas Campaign," says Maj. Robert Mueller, corps officer of The Salvation Army. "The two-day kettle total of $170,547.41 is unprecedented and can be attributed to Mayo Clinic's unlimited match pledge. These matching funds will be of enormous support as we work to meet the growing needs in our community, from preventing homelessness to providing health care and the full spectrum of emergency social services."
The Rochester Salvation Army says more than just money was dropped in the kettles, including a gold ring and a gold coin valued at $1,500.
