(ABC 6 News) -- Construction is underway at Mayo Clinic's Health System campus in Austin, Minn. It's part of an $11 million investment to boost its services for patients and staff.
"We have six phases," said Tricia Dahl, the site's operations administrator. "We expect to be done in the year 2020, early 2021."
"On the outside, what's most noticeable is the construction on the link building," Dahl said. "That will come out of the hospital portion of the building and create a walkway."
Renovations will also include expanded waiting spaces for families in the remodeled medical-surgical unit and the family birth center.
"People will be able to take that front entrance and take that elevator to those units," Dahl said. "We'll be adding lifts for all patients for all the rooms. We're updating bathrooms, showers, that sort of thing."
Construction isn't just meant to expand the space. It's also aimed at providing a better patient experience.
"Family birth rooms will be much larger," Dahl said. "Large enough to accommodate mom and the family."
Dahl said the medical-surgical unit will also increase in size. "It's going to be a better environment for patients," she said.
For Dahl and staff, the developments are an exciting time.
"We're trying to provide a very calm environment," Dahl said. "It's exciting to see this grow and change, and see what we'll be capable with over the years."
