(ABC 6 News) -- Mayo Clinic Health Systems is closing its second small-town care provider in Mower County in five months.

MCHS announced on Friday that the last day for the clinic in Adams will be May 18.  The clinic in LeRoy was shut down in October 2017.

Dr. Scott Holtz, the only family doctor in Adams, has taken a new job with Mayo Clinic in Rochester.  His wife who works at MCHS in Austin, Dr. Carol Holtz, also accepted a new position in Rochester. Nursing and support staff in Adams will transfer to Austin, according to a press release.

Mayo Clinic officials said the decision was "not made lightly" after assessing the needs of the area with limited primary care provider staff.

A letter will be sent to patients laying out their care options, but Mayo expects most patients to receive treatment at the Austin Clinic. More than half the patients at the Adams clinic travel from Austin, according to the release.

MCHS said it is working with city leaders in Adams and Leroy on solutions for diminishing rural health care, including educating people on telemedicine options available online and over the phone.

"We look forward to hearing from community leaders and members – what they need, what barriers to care we can help solve, and their creative ideas to build a new model of care for routine conditions, wellness promotion and medication maintenance that is available from the convenience of their own home," said Dr. Annie Sadosty, regional vice president for Mayo Clinic Health System - Southeast Minnesota, in a statement.

Hospital officials said they are aggressively recruiting primary care providers to increase patient access to care in the area.
