(ABC 6 News) - No charges will be filed in the investigation into a racist video posted by two Mason City teens.
According to a press release from the Clear Lake Police Department, who was assisting the Mason City Police Department in the investigation, while the video contained racist and inappropriate remarks it was determined that "no crime occurred and the speech was protected under the 1st Amendment."
In the release Clear Lake Police Chief Roth was quoted as saying, “When I spoke with Mason City Police Chief Brinkley about this incident, it became apparent that we needed to investigate this incident immediately [...] We worked on this case for several days and after speaking with the lead investigator and the county attorney, we felt the social media post did not rise to the level of a criminal charge.”
Investigators in this case also worked with the Cerro Gordo County Attorney's Office and the Mason City School District.
