"The Order of the French Legion of Honor is the highest order that does exist in France," said Guillaume Lacroix, French Consul General based in Chicago.

His given name is Marcus, but everyone calls him Stub.

"What you're country did for my country, my continent is something we will never forget" Guillaume Lacroix said during a medal presentation ceremony at the American Legion in Manly, Iowa.

"Because my nation was in need of assistance and without the assistance of our allies France would no longer be a free, democratic and independent country."

Stub Bartuzek had already earned a long list of military honors ... three bronze stars, one good conduct medal, one American campaign medal, to name just a few.

On Tuesday he received another honor … the highest honor is given by the French.

“Because you saved our country. You saved our freedom. You saved our values, you saved our independence and you restored our dignity" Consul General Guillaume Lacroix said.

"To thank a true American hero."

Does Stub Bartusek think of himself that way: “No, no,” he said. “I was just doing the job they asked me to do and I'd do it again."
