(ABC 6 News) - A 30-year-old man was taken to the hospital for surgery Monday afternoon, after injuring himself during a series of incidents authorities believe he hallucinated.

The Olmsted County Sheriff's Office was called to a trailer park on the 7400 block of Highway 63 around 1:15 p.m. Monday, after receiving a report of a man moving back and forth in front of a trailer carrying a hammer and yelling, "Do you need help?" and other similar phrases.

Captain Scott Behrns said authorities arrived shortly after the man kicked the door in to the trailer. Authorities put the man in handcuffs after he allegedly ran at them with the hammer. Behrns said deputies determined no one was inside the trailer.

Behrns said he man told deputies he was trying to fight off green snakes, which were everywhere, and he heard a woman scream and ran over to try and help her. Behrns said there were indications the man had mental health issues and was hallucinating from methamphetamine use.

Behrns said the man also had a severe wound on his left foot. After deputies searched his own trailer nearby, they found indications that the man shot himself in the foot when he was trying to ward off the snakes he believed were attacking him.

He was taken to Mayo Clinic Hospital, Saint Marys Campus for immediate surgery on his left foot.
