Local Thrift Shop Gives 100% of Profits Back to Community

(ABC 6 News) --  After six months of transforming an unused Church room into a boutique style thrift shop, “Thrift on Fifth” opened in the lower level of the Christ United Methodist Church in Rochester in the fall of 2017.

"We have the best prices in town. All of the adult items are a dollar and all of the children's items and teen items are 50 cents,” said Co-Chair of the Thrift on Fifth Committee Bobbi Nichols.

The shop is completely run by volunteers like Bobbi and Pam Lund who also co-chairs the committee.

“The group of volunteers are wonderful women, so I really enjoy the time I spend here,” said Lund.

They put in hours of work each week.

“There are about eight of us that come on Tuesday mornings and unload all of the donations and put them out.  It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun work,” said Nichols.

All of their hard work has paid off.

“In 2018 we raised $12,000 approximately,” said Nichols.

That money is going right back to the community.

“We have a very new childcare center that just opened in the Fall. Childcare, as you know, costs money. Teachers, meals—everything is very expensive. We have been able to subsidize families that have multiple children or that might be on a budget,” said Lund.

Executive Director of Thrive Childcare Tanya Goretzki said they’ve been able to subsidize six families with these funds and other donations.

“Which to them means the world that they can put their children in a really great place. They have a parent-share that they pay so they are able to give a little and the rest is subsidized by donations we receive from Thrift of Fifth,” said Goretzki,

Nichols hopes they can continue the shop for as long as possible.

“We all have a lot of enthusiasm, the women who work here enjoy each other and we have a good time,” she said.

The store is open Wednesday nights from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to Noon.
