(ABC 6 News) -- A group of quilters from 125 Live in Rochester presented a Rochester woman with a warm gift on a cold and snowy Veterans Day. Weeks of work went into crafting a quilt, a gift to thank Jennifer Shumaker for her service.
"This lady does so much for so many we felt we should do something a little special for her,” said Mary Bridget Hanson, Coordinator of Castle Quilters.
Shumaker served in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
"Between that and an active-duty total of 26 years. My last tour was 2009-2010 in Afghanistan,” said Shumaker.
Then she chose to serve in another way, as an Olmsted County Veteran’s Services Officer.
"It's my dream job. It's my favorite thing to do is get up and help vets every day,” she said.
For her dedication, the Castle Quilters chose to thank her with their second Veterans Day quilt. It’s a tradition they hope to continue for years to come.
"I'm just extremely honored that they thought of me to present me with a gift to honor the things that I do for other veterans. I'm usually not the veteran. I'm usually providing the services for other veterans," said Shumaker.
After honoring a male vet last year, they chose to honor a woman this year.
"I think at times women veterans get unrecognized. When I walk into a room they know who I am now because I'm a service officer. But before that, they were looking for my husband. So I had to remind them constantly that nope I'm the veteran," said Shumaker.
So to be remembered for her service with a quilt dedication... "That'll be a lifelong memory for me,” she said.
And for the ladies at 125 Live, the quilt is a symbol of their gratitude.
"It's just special that you can wrap up and think about the person who gave it to you or it’s comforting if you’re having a bad day,” said Hanson.
Letting veterans know they’re cared for.
The Castle Quilters also donated six quilts to the Disabled American Veterans Charity. They donate to nearly 20 agencies every year.
In honor of Veterans Day, for the entire month of November, 125 Live is waiving the $25 joining fee for veterans.
Additionally, 125 Live received a $10,000 grant from the Veterans Support Foundation. To celebrate that gift, they are offering 10 percent off on all memberships to veterans plus their spouses and widows.
