Local Businesses Working Together to Help Veterans

(ABC 6 News) -- Stand Down for Veterans had their annual event on Saturday. Different organizations throughout the community offered free services to local men and women who have served our country.

“When you come back from service, sometimes you don’t know what benefits you have out there. It’s good to put a group of people together to give one location to come to in order to get the services they are looking for and that there are other services they may not have known about,” said Sadie Rezac who is the leader of the Southern Region of the Minnesota Assistance Council of Veterans.

That was the case for veteran Arraon Bigalk,  “I am here to fill out my will,” said Bigalk. But when he walked in, he saw other resources he didn’t even know existed, “There’s a couple booths for healthcare, and then obviously vision. And there’s a lot of volunteers here I see. And then employment opportunities which I know is usually one of the difficult ones for some people,” Bigalk told ABC 6 News.

Scott Metcalf was also at the event on Saturday. Metcalf is a Disabled Veterans Opportunity specialist and helps these vets find jobs, “Whether we have one veteran or 500 veterans if we can help one veteran we’ve succeeded in what we’re supposed to be doing,” said Metcalf.

He said that this event not only helps raise awareness about services available but helps veterans feel comfortable enough to use them, “They think that they don’t deserve it or they don’t want assistance, a freebie, or welfare.  They figure they want to earn whatever they have, not realizing the services we provide are not gimmes. They are stuff they have earned through their service in the military,” said Metcalf.

Sadie hopes the veterans at the event take advantage of all of the services Rochester has to offer, “At the end of the day I just hope we can accomplish providing services to veterans and showing veterans there are other services out there that they maybe weren’t aware of and that we can maybe just make their lives better.”
