(ABC 6 News) - Decorating your tree is typically a family affair. But there may be one member of your family who isn't much help, your cat.

The Animal Rescue of Iowa says there are ways to make things easier for you and your cat this holiday.

One tip is to leave the ornaments off the tree for a few days and let your cat adjust to it being in the house. It's going to be the sparkly and shiny decorations that distract them.

It's also suggested you invest in a heavy-duty tree stand and anchor your tree to the wall or ceiling.

As far as using a deterrent, don't go for the spray bottle. Try putting orange peels or pine cones under the tree instead to make it less appealing.

One last suggestion is to decorate your tree with your pets in mind. Leave the lower section bare so your cats aren't tempted to play with the decorations.
