(ABC 6 News) - The man authorities say was a young men's leader at a church in Kasson during the time he assaulted a young boy made his first appearance in court Thursday.
34-year-old Michael Adam Davis was arrested earlier this month after an alleged sexual assault with a minor and has been charged with 2 counts of 1st-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct.
According to investigators, the two met while Davis was a young men's leader at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints but that the alleged assault did not occur at the church or at a church function.
Church officials told ABC 6 News via e-mail that Davis had no authority over minors in his role at the church.
In court Thursday Davis's attorney stated they're considering contesting Davis's alleged position of authority at the church.
Davis is a lifetime registered sex offender due to a previous conviction in Utah involving a minor.
He remains in custody with conditional bail set at $100,000.
A pre-trial was scheduled for May 22nd.
