(ABC 6 News)-- To most pet owners, their fur friends become an extended family member. On Saturday, Rochester Downtown Alliance created the perfect family day out for dogs and their humans.

During the fifth annual Dogs Downtown event, dozens of different breeds cooled off with their owners nearby. The event, geared towards dog lovers filled the afternoon with relaxation stations, splashing in the pool, and even dog-friendly ice cream.

Organizers say the event is one way to bring the community together and also allow some dog owners in the area a chance to include their fur babies too. Rosalind McKinley, who happened to be at the event with her new dog Louie said she enjoys attending the event every year, "This is Louie's first year, Chester and I come a lot, yeah we come every year and I've been with all my other dogs in the past," said McKinley.

Peace Plaza was filled with hundreds, if not thousands of dogs- from Golden Doodles and miniature Schnauzers to German Shepherds, and Great Danes.

The event also offered dog massages, agility courses, and coffee drinks with whipped cream; and with that many activities, Monika Kopet says it's no wonder they see such a wide variety of attendees each year, "For people, we get 9 to ten thousand when we have nice weather like we had today so you could say maybe half that or more for dogs," said Kopet,  events manager for Downtown Alliance.
