(ABC 6 News) -- In recent years downtown Austin has enjoyed a renaissance, and the latest chapter in that story may be about to be written.
"It's a Grand Stay hotel that we've been working with for quite a while now,” Austin city administrator Craig Clark said. “They're looking at the open lot next to the Tendermaid in downtown Austin with interest in putting a hotel there."
It’s a proposed 56 unit hotel on a piece of land that's currently sitting empty.
"It's been vacant for some time now,” city administrator Craig Clark told us. “Former single family homes there that were abated and cleaned up and now a chance for redevelopment, really leveraging the SPAM Museum in the downtown and tourist interest there, the downtown hockey arenas that we have with the Bruins of course, certainly the new rec center, and just a boutique hotel attracting someone who would want to be in a more urban atmosphere and in the downtown."
"It's very exciting to have another business coming into our downtown area because helping to expand and strengthen the downtown community helps the entire community of Austin" Austin Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Elaine Hansen added.
“The building would be situated kind of with the front facing the east and then accessing off fourth," the city’s Craig Clark said.
A development group has made an abatement request from the taxing entities, which would include the city, the county, and the school district.
"They're really looking at it for some of the site development costs," city administrator Craig Clark said.
And barring any unforeseen problems:
"They'd like to get started right away, so moving forward here in the spring and early summer."
