(ABC 6 News) - Students at Mayo High School are going the extra mile to help fellow students in need, but organizers say they're in need themselves.
A small room right outside the lunch room at Mayo High School in Rochester is making a big difference for students and families needing help making ends meet.
"Around 200 items taken from the room on a monthly basis and that just keeps on growing. Those are only things that we do track," said Teagan Holmes, president of Support our Spartans.
The Support our Spartans room, otherwise known as S.O.S, is a program that allows students to get school supplies like hygiene items, food, and even clothing, all anonymously.
Now, one group of students saw the help the room was providing and wanted to help out as well.
"With the help of all of their members we are able to reach out to more people and get the word out more," said Holmes.
"Our Mayo Honor Society is about service and leadership and we want to make sure that every member of our Mayo High School community, not just our honor society community, is able to function well at school," said Leah Folpe, president of Mayo Honor Society.
Monday night honor society students will go door-to-door to collect items for the S.O.S. room.
"We don't always realize how much others need, but just looking at how much is used from that room it's definitely there,” said Claire Schleusner, secretary, Mayo honor society.
"They're students that are within our school. They're students that we walk in the hallways with every day. It's just great that everyone can help each other," said Holmes.
