Norm Hecimovich was a father, a husband, a school principal, a city council member and a soldier.

"That's one big set of shoes to fill," Ron Hanson said.

Today, Norm Hecimovich is being remembered as someone who shaped countless lives … and an entire community.

"He was the best example that I can think of what it is to be a good citizen," said Scott Wiechmann, Post Commander of VFW Post 1216 in Austin.

Norm Hecimovich died Sunday at the age of 83.

“Norm was a great advocate for veterans," Scott Wiechmann said.

"And every veteran meant something to Norm” added Ron Hanson, a member of the VFW color guard.

“He would do anything he could to promote veterans the welfare of veterans in Austin, the county, the state, nationally" Post Commander Scott Wiechmann told us.

"He was in Korea, he was in Viet Nam and he was in Saudi," said Ron Hanson, who will take over as Color Guard Commander with Norm Hecimovich’s passing.

"The freedoms that we take for granted are only there because people were willing to put their lives on the line,” Norm Hecimovich told ABC 6 in an interview in 2012.

"Whether you were a veteran or just a citizen or somebody he knew, he cared about you, and he put that into action" Scott Wiechmann remembered.

"He handled everything with ease and he always said failure is not an option,” Ron Hanson said.

"It will take more than one man to fulfill what he was doing not only for veterans but for this community," VFW Post Commander Scott Wiechmann said.

A memorial service for Norm Hecimovich is scheduled for 11 o’clock Saturday morning, March third at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Austin.
