(ABC 6 News)-- Word today of a multi-million dollar healthcare project in our area.

The announcement came from Mayo Clinic Health System.

"It's important because it's going to be all new space, all modern equipment," said Dr. Mark Ciota, CEO of Mayo Clinic Health System Albert Lea and Austin.

"I'm excited to announce today our plans to build a new family birth center on the Austin campus."

"Ten great sized rooms will be in the unit along with a C-section suite and a baby nursery,” added Dr. Sumit Bhagra, medical director for MCHS Albert Lea and Austin. “These rooms will have state of the art technology to help our staff deliver  safe and efficient care, and provide  a comfortable, convenient  and healing environment for the families the child and the visiting family members here."

“There's going to be a link, a two-story link in this area and that's what's depicted here," Dr. Mark Ciota said, displaying an architectural depiction of the project.

"It's going to be an 11-point-2 million dollar investment on this campus.”

A year ago, Mayo announced plans to consolidate most of its inpatient services from its Albert Lea campus to Austin.

"As part of the consolidation plan, we knew we needed to combine the birthing units. Once we're all done and up and running we will have nurses that will have the opportunity to work on this campus that are currently in Albert Lea," Dr. Mark Ciota explained.

“The construction we believe will start mid-2019 and then we would anticipate that would be done  at the end of 2020."

And space won't be the only thing that's new:

"There's a group that looked at different names,” Dr. Mark Ciota told us. “And we really liked family birthing center because it is a family event."
