(ABC 6 news) - Gov. Tim Walz announced June 12 that he has secured a Major Disaster Declaration, providing federal funds to aid in emergency relief for 51 counties, including a few in our area.
Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services will soon be seeing federal disaster relief funding after winter weather ravaged many of their powerlines in April.
Referring back to the storm, Lori Read, Compliance Coordinator for Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services, said, “We knew we were going to need help to repair our system.”
“The final count on the poles was over 500 poles that were either broken, down or damaged. We had to repair and replace all of those poles, all of those lines that were down.” Said Angie Kolker, Director of Finance for Freeborn-Mower Cooperative Services.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has now authorized the use of federal public assistance funds to reimburse affected communities for response and recovery costs.
Kolker says, “We will use those funds to recover the cost already incurred to restore the power to our members. That includes all of the outside crews that came in, that includes all the material, the time – every cost.”
Freeborn-Mower Coop is waiting on their final invoice before sending out their request for an estimated 3 million dollars.
Read stated, “We’re incredibly appreciative to have this financial aid coming back to us to help our members.”
Without the help, they say a rate adjustment could have been pushed along to members.
