(ABC 6 News)-- It was a day of clean-up in Mason City after heavy rain swamped much of the community, leaving damage to homes and businesses around the community.
On Monday, the city launched a project designed to make the clean-up easier.
It's called the flood response center, and the hope is to hear from those who've suffered flood damage and need help, and those willing to give it.
“O one stop where citizens could call in if they had any need for clean-up those that are not able to take care of clean up or if it's just too overwhelming," Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Coordinator Steve O’Neil explained.
“My furnace is gone, my hot water heater is gone, my washer and dryer are probably damaged,” Mason City resident Dan Flugge explained, taking us on a tour of his water-logged basement. “I'm taking the stool off now because it started coming up in the bowl. I got that plugged so it slowed it down but then the pressure was so great it started coming out the top of the tank."
"They're also taking the names of any agencies, individuals who would be willing to volunteer," Steven O’Neil said of the phone volunteers.
"It started coming up in the center drain here and I took off work at noon, started bailing it with a bucket. I came up a foot deep just boom, just like that,” Dan Flugge recalled.
He described it as the worst flooding he’s experienced in the 39 years he’s been at his home on the northeast side of Mason City: “ In ‘08 when we had the big flood we had water down here. It came up through the sewer but not to this extent."
“So the important thing is taking care of those people, trying to get their needs taken care of as best we can” emergency management coordinator Steve O’Neil said.
The phone bank will be staffed Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and possibly after Tuesday if demand warrants.
If you need help with flood clean up or would like to volunteer, you can call:
