(ABC 6 News) -- This time last year utility workers were busy in our area after significant flooding.

One year later, an Albert Lea couple is counting their blessings after that flooding caused their basement to cave in.

Jess Dreyling says she and her husband were just remembering their experience from that day and how they were able to get back on their feet.

"I was upstairs and Kevin had walked upstairs and the landlord was still downstairs. Well then we heard a little, like you could hear the house like, I don't know there was like a crack," said Dreyling.

The homeowner says that noise was a wall collapsing inside of the basement.

The wall caving in as they were assessing water damage inside their Albert Lea home.

Rich Hall, the Freeborn County Emergency Management Director, says the county suffered a lot of damage to homes and buildings.

"It is the one year anniversary of, of the flood in Freeborn County that did about $2.8M in damage in public infrastructure,” said Hall.

That damage left the Dreylings without a place to live.

"It was scary. There’s a lot of things that go through your mind. You're not sure if the whole house needs to be, like the foundation needs to be redone. You're not, you don't, I mean you just don't know at that point," said Dreyling.

Their landlord owns a construction company and was able to quickly make repairs - getting the family back home in a week.

FEMA, and Freeborn County emergency management also made the rounds to help.

"Once the state's gone, FEMAs gone, you know it's still a recovery process and it returns into the local, the local emergency managers," said Hall.

There are some things lost in the flood the Dreylings will never get back but they say they have what matters most.

"We're just glad everyone like that our landlord got up there when he did because/we're glad Kevin was upstairs. Like l said a lot worse stuff could of happened. We got pretty lucky," added Dreyling.
