Police ID Victim in Fatal Train Accident

(ABC 6 News) - UPDATE: The Rochester Police Department has identified the victim in Friday's fatal train accident as 58-year-old Ricky Thalacker of Rochester.

Police say the accident happened around 7:50 a.m. and that through eyewitness statements and their preliminary investigation it appears the crossing gates were down and all signals were operational at the time/

The Canadian Pacific Railway and the Canadian Pacific Police Service are assisting in the investigation.

According to law enforcement, the victim in a fatal accident in downtown Rochester has been identified as a male.

Rochester police told ABC 6 News the man was riding a mobility scooter and it appears one of the wheels was stuck on the train track at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and 1st Avenue when he was struck.

A witness said the man was thrown from the scooter on impact.

Police said the railroad crossing arms were down and the lights were working at the time of the accident.

Law enforcement is responding to a fatal accident involving a train and a mobility scooter at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and 1st Avenue. It happened around 7:45 a.m. Friday, May 18. 

Both 1st Avenue and Broadway are closed.

Rochester police are asking people to avoid downtown as much as possible right now. Those stretches of road are expected to be closed until at least 11 a.m. Friday.
