October 11, 2017 11:26 PM

(ABC 6 News) -- A survivor of domestic abuse is raising money for the Rochester Women's Shelter through the month of October.

Along with collecting money, Famous Dave's in Rochester has bins to donate things like household items, baby supplies, clothes and shoes for kids.

April Evenson wants to give back to the shelter, which gave her a chance to start over and heal.

"I am a survivor of domestic violence and not a victim," said April who is also an advocate.  "I feel my purpose today is to be a voice for those who no longer have a voice. "

Donations will be collected all month long.  Workers will also wear purple t-shirts for National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
