Drive-thru flu shots

(ABC 6 News) - On top of the COVID-19 pandemic, it's almost flu season and health experts say flu shots are even more important this year.

As for convenience, if you can get a chicken sandwich at a drive-thru, why not a flu shot? Olmsted Medical Center is offering this option at their northwest clinic and no appointment is needed.

"We have a patient service representative that's doing real time registration," Gregory Harris, OMC's manager of clinical operations, said. "Bring your insurance card, bring your drivers license in case we need to verify those and wear a short sleeve shirt if you can. That process takes just a couple minutes then it's on through the end of the driveway into the tent where the nurses will vaccinate."

This is the first week of the drive-thru, with Monday being day one. Harris said about 160 people came through that day and he thinks the clinic could see about 200 people a day for a flu shot.

"It's always very important to get your flu shot, but they are encouraging it even more so and a little bit earlier because of the COVID," retired Registered Nurse Shelley DeBernardi said.

The drive-thru is open:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Thursday 10 a.m. to 7:00 p.m

"This one quick, easy way to protect yourself with seasonal influenza," Harris said. "There are a number of deaths related to that every year and there's a vaccine available for that. So, this year's vaccine includes four different strains and kind of targeting the ones we have been seeing."
