Partnership Between Two Powerhouses, Mayo Clinic and Google

(ABC 6 News)-- Billions of dollars and world-class innovations are made in Rochester.

"It's a hot city right now," said Lisa Clarke, executive director of Destination Medical Center. "People want to live here, people want to work here, people want to play here."

The city just got a major boost thanks to a 10-year partnership with Google.

"The ability to reach our patients beyond our walls [and] to extend worldwide literally would require new technologies," said Dr. Steve Peters, Mayo Clinic's chief medical information officer.

Dr. Peters said he hopes teaming up will allow Mayo Clinic to provide a better quality of care.

"In the longer run, we'll hope there will be patient benefits because of the knowledge we'll be bringing to bear new treatments, new diagnostic skills, and new cures.

The partnership will also include a new office space where engineers will come in from all over the country.

"It'll be an exciting part to have more vibrant technologies in the city," Peters said.

But Dr. Peters said it's also a matter of security, which is why Google Cloud, an online service platform, will help store, protect, and analyze data for Mayo Clinic.

Clarke said the partnership will help the DMC's goal of providing more jobs to Rochester.

"You take Google and the knowledge base, and you combine it with Mayo Clinic's delivery of care and you create problem-solving and patient experience like no other."
