According to the Cresco Police Chief Tim Ruroden, officers responded to a trailer court in the area of Willow Courtyard on 700 S. Elm St. around 1:30 for reports of shots fired.

When officers arrived they called for backup for an alleged standoff situation.

A hostage negotiation team was brought in and worked with the subject for around 5 hours before the subject surrendered peacefully around 6 a.m.

When law enforcement made entry into the trailer they found a dead body with a gunshot wound.

Police have not released the identity of the subject or the deceased.

During the incident, the Howard-Winneshiek School District was contacted and asked to delay their school start due to bus stops being in the area.

Due to school already having an early release day school officials made the decision to cancel school entirely.

The Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
