(ABC 6 News) -- The North Side Wal-Mart in Rochester was extra busy Saturday afternoon. 80 local children, carrying shopping lists packed the isles on a mission to find the perfect gift. Not only for family members but also for themselves.
8-year-old Vanessa spent Saturday morning shopping at Wal-Mart with Captain Casey Moilanen from the Rochester Police Department.
“It was a really special day for the Police Department and the community. The Police Department gets to work with kids and do some Christmas shopping for their families.
Saturday marked the 15th annual “Shop with a Cop” event. Children gathered to pick out gifts for every one of their list.
For Vanessa that was mom, dad, sister, and two brothers. Some were easier to shop for than others. For her sister, she found lip gloss and nail polish, and for her fourteen-year-old brother…
“I think it’s going to be hard,” she said.
With the $115 budget, she was able to get something for everyone on her list, along with a couple of Barbie’s for herself.
For the officers, it’s a great experience too.
"It's a way for us to show the kids that we're just like anybody else. We try to remove any barriers there might be between police officers so they can trust the officers and identify them as regular people too," said Capt. Moilanen.
The day was long, but ultimately a success.
"You got your mom some socks, the blanket, perfume. Your sister the Sing movie and the nail polish and lip gloss and your brother the Xbox game you the two Barbies,” he said.
