(ABC 6 News) -- Leah Lysne has been looking for her own way to give back to the community for years. Now, the program she launched is looking for a veteran in need of a companion to get a bulldog puppy.
"I've seen firsthand what animals can do for people emotionally and I think it's a wonderful thing. I want to share that," she said.
Lysne, who runs Lonely Acres English Bulldogs near Lansing, has volunteered with her friend Gina Grundmeier and the T 'N G Pay it Forward bathroom renovation program in the past, so when the idea sprang up, she called Grundmeier to help get it off the ground.
The campaign is accepting nominations from veterans or their friends or family members through October 31, asking them why the nominee would benefit from a new puppy. A winner will be chosen in November.
It's not just the dog, either; Austin-based Rolling Green Fencing will install a fence for the winner to keep the dog safely in its new home. Other businesses have donated supplies and money to cover veterinarian bills.
"It's a great way to give back to the community. Without the veterans, we wouldn't have anything to stand for," Rolling Green Fencing's owner Nick Wangen said.
And with thousands of veterans committing suicide annually and countless others coming home with wounds both seen and unseen, Lysne said it's her way of paying it forward and making a difference in the life of someone who sacrificed so much.
"Even for myself, they can make a dark day bright again," she said. "The love that they share, that they show really lifts a person's spirits."
