Hollywood Dreamers Get Opportunity to Learn Movie-Making Skills

(ABC 6 News)-- Cameras are rolling, movie scenes are being edited...Harmony is buzzing with cinematic creativity.

A handful of people with big Hollywood dreams are hard at work, preparing to have their movies premiered on the big screen.

“I just wanted something fun and new for the kids to do,” said Amber Coaty, the Owner of the JEM Theatre in Harmony.

Amber decided to host a "Movie Camp" this summer.

Since July 9, eight people (over the age of 12) have been writing, shooting and editing three different movies. Some have even starred in them.

“It’s a lot more work than I expected,” said one student, Caiden Folken. “It can be a good time.”

“I hope that [people coming to watch the movie] come in thinking our movie is going to be the worst … and figure out it’s going to be the best,” said Dale Coaty, another student.

Now that their movies are completely shot, filmmaking students are putting their work together. Their editing booth also happens to be the same location where all three movies will hit the big screen.

Through the experience, many lessons have been learned.

“[Avoid shooting] in hot weather,” said Alayna Coaty. “You get very cranky.”

Alayna’s group (which includes a father/daughter duo) is working on a horror movie.

“I have been interested in film for a long time,” said Kim Nelson. “But also, Kira mentioned the acting and directing might be something she is interested in. There's been some independent work in the Rochester area and the Northfield area … but nothing really further southeast.”

Until now. Amber hopes to bring the summer camp back next year.

It's produced more than just movies. Many friendships were formed.

A movie premiere will be held Thursday, July 19, at the JEM Theatre. The black-tie event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be complete with a red carpet, paparazzi and an awards ceremony.
