Coming Soon: More Parking in Downtown

(ABC 6 News) - In just a few weeks hundreds of parking spots will soon be open to the public in downtown Rochester.

Businesses like Hefe Rojo and Victoria’s say they believe everyone will reap the benefits.

"There's not that much parking down here for customers and employees,” said Marshall Goodman, the manager of Hefe Rojo.

"The frustration grows absolute with our clients and our customers,” said Natalie Victoria, the co-owner of Victoria’s.

Rochester businesses say downtown parking is a frustration shared across the board.

But they’re hoping that will all change with the recent announcement that nearly 350 parking spots are opening up on May 1.

They're located at the 3rd street ramp next to Dooley’s.

The city says a lease allowing Mayo Clinic employees to park there has come to an end and it decided not to renew.

"It’ll increase the perception of parking downtown. Because I think that that's the biggest misknown out there. Is that perception of parking doesn't exist. So people are going to maybe not even try to find parking downtown. So that is going to help people decide if they're gonna come downtown or not as you know they'll understand that there is additional parking,” said Victoria.

It's also an opportunity for the city, which says its first priority is to serve all the incoming visitors.

"Just making the downtown area busier. Creating more revenue for restaurants,” said Goodman.

However, the owner of Tangerine downtown says she doesn't think it's going to change much.

She questions what's going to stop those Mayo employees from parking there anyway.

Goodman says he has an idea for that, “I feel like if they just had maybe a few more ramps somewhere down here that were strictly for mayo employees instead of a shared one like that, it would be much better but I don't really know where you'd put that.”

The city says it's still looking into ways of how parking will move around in the ramp, but they're hoping to finalize that soon.
