(ABC 6 News) - Clarksville native and American Idol finalist Maddie Poppe returned home Tuesday to visit with her community and put on a local concert.
"She's an Iowa girl you not like her she's an Iowa girl," said Sue Kressin from Shell Rock.
After a busy day, Poppe's hometown honored her with a parade through downtown. Hundreds of fans lined the streets as they chanted “Maddie” at the top of their lungs.
"We knew she was from Iowa, and we heard her sing and we hoped she would make it," said Annie Ondrashek from Calmar Iowa.
Fans like Ondrashek and her family flocked in from across the state and beyond.
"We were jumping for joy; I was surprised today we were going so I was excited!" Ondrashek said.
Students like Courtney Moser from Wartburg College decided to make the short drive into Clarksville for Poppe’s grand entrance
"I think supporting someone who's local, it makes it just so much more real,” Moser said. “I've really enjoyed American idol all throughout the years and now knowing someone so close to home it's really exciting."
After the parade, a caravan of cars streamed out of Clarksville and headed to the Butler County Fairgrounds, where Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds made a big announcement.
"We're officially going to make a proclamation making it Maddie Poppe Day on Sunday and encouraging every single Iowan to vote for Maddie Poppe!” Reynolds said.
After that, Poppe held her own concert, on the very stage she was helping set up at the county fair less than a year ago.
"It's cool that I've had so much support from you guys that's carried me out of that spot,” Poppe said. “For the longest time, I was the contestant who had the fewest number of followers and now I feel like I have got the biggest following I could ever ask for."
She thanked her Iowa community through the song “Landslide,” and said this would be her tribute song to her hometown during the American Idol finale Sunday night.
"Go Maddie! We're rooting for you," Kressin said.
Poppe will be back on the American Idol stage Sunday night, competing against the other two finalists. You can watch both parts one and two of the finale on ABC 6 News. To see the schedule, click here.
