(ABC 6 News) -- A Floyd County bus service at risk of shutting down due to not having a provider will continue through a public-private partnership.
Charles City Administrator Steve Diers said Wednesday the city would take over the maintenance, insurance and fueling for the buses when the contract with the current provider ends at the end of July. The city will also be responsible for hiring drivers.
The day-to-day operations will be handled by Circle K Communications, Diers said.
The program has seen cutbacks after declining ridership and a lack of drivers. Rides from Charles City to Mason City and elsewhere in Floyd County ended in December.
The contract with the current provider had been set to expire June 30 so the provider could take on the operation of the transit system in Mitchell County, but both sides agreed to a one-month extension to allow the city time to find an alternative solution.
