Census Canvassing Kicks Off

August 13, 2019 10:51 PM

The 2020 Census is still several months out, but local preparations are underway now.

“Our community is growing really quickly, and some buildings are gone, and some buildings are being built, and we have new people moving in every day, and people moving around, and when you do the census, you want to count every single resident,” said Sheila Kiscaden, Olmsted County Commissioner.

“The information really dictates the number of elected officials we have, funding, etc.,” said Jenna Bowman, communications and engagement manager for the City of Rochester.

Ahead of National Census Day on April 1, 2020, census workers will probably be walking around your neighborhood.

“Most of the workers are local census workers so they might be your neighbor that you recognize,” said Brittney Marschall, communications project lead for Olmsted County.

“We have a lot at stake. In the last census we came very close to losing a congressional seat based on our population,” Kiscaden said. You should be able to spot the census workers fairly easily, with laptops and black canvas bags with Census Bureau logos, in addition to their Personal Identity Verification cards.

“They’re just verifying simply verifying whether an address still exists, if there’s a new address. We’ve had a ton of growth in the Rochester/Olmsted County area, so there’s new buildings coming up, buildings coming down,” Marschall said.

“Eventually people will get a postcard in the mail reminding them to do the census, but right now you’ve got to be sure you have the right address for everyone,” Kiscaden said.

While it’s just the kick-off, it’s an important step to achieving that complete count.
