Last week, on Thursday, district officials sent out a notice to families saying there were some visible sagging to the roof of the building due to the amount of snow on it.  Classes were canceled on Friday.

Feb. 28, 2019:

Byron Middle School will remain closed Friday so the building can undergo work after heavy snow on the rooftop created structural concerns.

Byron's Superintendent sent out this message to parents and guardians Thursday evening:

Good Evening,

Here is the latest information regarding Byron Middle School.  We have met with structural engineers upon their initial inspection of the roof.  We have begun to reinforce portions of the roof and as soon as possible work will begin to clear the snow and further assess and repair any damage.

As a safety precaution, Byron Middle School 6th-8th grade will be closed tomorrow Friday, March 1. It will be Flex Learning Day for Byron Middle School students only.

The district will continue regular physical inspections to make sure facilities are safe for students and staff.  We will continue to monitor and evaluate this situation for further developments.

Thank you,

Dr. Joey Page, Superintendent

Previous stories:

Byron Public Schools Superintendent said there was visible sagging on the middle school roof which caused officials to dismiss students early Thursday.

Here is the latest update sent to parents and guardians:

Hello,

Due to the weight of accumulated snow on the Byron Middle School roof,  there was some visible sagging.  As a safety measure, students and staff were sent home early today.  There is concern regarding whether the accumulated snow may affect some important utilities -- electrical conduits, sprinkler systems, and heating pipes -- so the school district wanted to have these issues evaluated by engineers.  At this time we have not received any information that the roof presents any direct threat to student and staff safety.   I will keep you updated with further information.

Sincerely,

Dr. Page
