(ABC 6 News) – On Thursday, Destination Medical Center will break ground on what it's calling a world-leading biomedical and life science research facility.
Nearby businesses say they believe Discovery Square will only add to what Mayo has created in the past 150 years.
Brad Smith, the public relationships manager at People’s Food Co-op says the store has been waiting for this day for a while, "We were really excited. We felt like as this conversation was taking place for the past few years, we were sort of a small piece of that puzzle."
The pieces of that puzzle will start coming together at the corner of 2nd Avenue and 5th Street Southwest.
DMC executive director, Lisa Clarke, says it will be a one-of-a-kind campus, “It’s more than breaking ground; it's more than building a building. It's actually creating a culture and it's affirmation on of the work that we've done on DMC over the last couple of years to develop this Destination Medical Center.”
Phase one, which should be done in Spring of 2019, is the start of a 16-city block sub-district that nearby businesses like People's Food Co-op are working to build on.
"I think as people start to live, work and recreate in downtown Rochester, you know we all do better when we all do better so it's great that people are just moving down to this area and wanting to participate in downtown Rochester," said Smith.
DMC officials say it will also unite doctors and researchers to bring innovative discoveries to patients and the medical industry.
"So that we create this ecosystem so new jobs can come to this market, new companies can come to this market and they can all create together in this particular area called Discovery Square,” said Clarke.
It’s a goal, Smith says he and others share with DMC.
"We kind of joke with our neighbors, the Blue Duck Kitchen and Pasquale’s about how we're sort of starting to become the food neighborhood of Rochester and so sort of being that, the food hub of the area is something we'd love to see," added Smith.
Thursday's groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to start at 11 a.m. and the entire community is invited.
