(ABC 6 News) -- A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. In fact, a local competition is helping save lives.
When they're not responding to fires and medical call, some Rochester firefighters are donating blood.
The “Battle of the Badges” is heating up as Rochester first responders do a final push for blood donations. This is the second year of the competition and it was moved to the summer months because of the increased need for blood donations this time of year.
While firefighters took the trophy last year, the race is tight. Right now, the Ambulance Service is in first place with 105 donations, followed by Law Enforcement with 99. Firefighters are currently in last place with 97 donations.
“Although we might be a few blood donations behind, we are convinced we are going to take the lead this last week,” said Chad Kuhlman with the Rochester Fire Department. “But it's not about us, it's about the patients that need the blood."
You can help your favorite team win by stopping by St. Marys Campus Joseph Building from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. or the Hilton Building from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. After you donate blood, check off which department you’re donating on behalf of.
A winner will be announced on Saturday, August 31st.
