UPDATE: We’re learning more about a body found over the weekend at a home in Southwest Austin.

Police say around 8:45 Saturday morning is when they were dispatched to the 800 block of 8th Avenue Southwest in Austin. When they arrived, police found an 18-year-old woman lying dead on the sidewalk outside her home. Her body was discovered by her father.

The Austin police department is leading the case while working closely with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Their main focus is trying to figure out the woman’s cause of death.

Police say a man was located on the roof outside the home of where the woman was found.

Nick Phanchan, a neighbor of the woman said:

“I took my dog and I noticed that the police were walking up and down the road. I wanted to get a little better view so I went over to my buddy’s mom’s house and I went to her backyard and thought I saw the body, but it was somebody on the roof so I went and told the police that somebody was hiding in the backyard.”

Police say that a man tried to flee the scene before being taken into custody for an unrelated probation violation. The Austin police are not confirming if that man had any involvement with the case. However, police believe he is not a threat or danger to the public at this time.

Phanchan says that man on the roof was a longtime friend of his. Saying that he hopes his friend does not have any involvement in the case and he is not sure why he would be in the area as he is not one to get himself in trouble.

Police have yet to release the identity of the woman.

An email was sent to parents and students at Austin High School last night regarding a student who had passed. That email saying that the district response team is working with the school to provide community support. Counselors were also available for students throughout the day. Police have not said if that email is related to their investigation.
